Itinerary – 3 days tour from Marrakech to desert

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

Your journey begins early in the morning when I meet you at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. As we leave the city behind, the landscape changes quickly, and we start climbing the High Atlas Mountains.

We drive along the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), the highest paved mountain road in Morocco. This road was built during the French protectorate and follows ancient Berber paths used for centuries by traders traveling between Marrakech and the Sahara. Along the way, we stop for panoramic views, photos, and to visit small Berber villages, where families still live from farming and herding.

By midday, we arrive at Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortified village was once an important stop on the trans-Saharan trade route, connecting salt, gold, and spices from Africa to Marrakech and beyond. I will explain the traditional Berber earthen architecture and the history of the kasbah, which has also appeared in many international films.

After lunch nearby, we continue through Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses, an area known for its rose cultivation and traditional products. As we reach the Dades Valley, the scenery becomes dramatic, with red rock formations and winding roads carved into the mountains.

Dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable hotel or riad in the Dades Valley.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, a historic region once filled with fortified homes built to protect families and trade goods. Many of these kasbahs still stand as silent witnesses of Morocco’s past.

Our next stop is the impressive Todra Gorge, a natural canyon with cliffs rising up to 300 meters. This area has always been vital for nomads and local communities due to its water source and fertile oasis. You will have time to walk through the gorge and enjoy its unique atmosphere.

As we head south, the landscape becomes more arid. In Erfoud, known as the gateway to the desert, I will explain the region’s famous fossils and marble, formed millions of years ago when this area was covered by the sea.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the horizon. Here, you switch from vehicle to camel, beginning a peaceful trek across the dunes at sunset. I will guide you through the desert as the colors of the sand change with the light.

You spend the night in a Sahara desert camp, enjoying a traditional dinner, Berber music around the fire, and a sky full of stars.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Marrakech

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, one of the most magical moments of the tour. After breakfast, we return by camel or 4×4 to the village.

Our first stop is Rissani, once the capital of the ancient Tafilalt region and an important trading center. If it is market day, I will take you to the traditional souk, where locals still trade livestock, dates, and spices using age-old customs.

We then drive through the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, lined with thousands of palm trees and ancient ksour (fortified villages). This fertile corridor has supported life in the desert for centuries and played a key role in caravan routes.

After lunch and scenic stops, we cross the High Atlas once more and arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, where I drop you off at your accommodation.
